What's happening in Coburg?
There has been a proposed change to the Moreland Planning Scheme, Amendment C123, put forward to facilitate the 'Coburg Activity Centre Zone' (a revised version of 'Coburg 2020').
This change introduces mandatory height limits within the zone, but takes away residents rights to object to development within the height limits.
This all doesn't sound too bad until you see the limits: 10 storeys in central Coburg (around the station, shops and oval), 10 storeys on each side of Bell St, and 5 storeys each side of Sydney Road down to Moreland Road. You can see the details of the plan on the Moreland Council website.
What is the Save Coburg campaign?
Residents of Coburg gathered in the the Anglican Parish Hall on 24 January 2013 to discuss the plans proposed by the Moreland City Council.
It was widely agreed that residents had not received adequate notice of the proposed changes from council. The residential area to the north of Bell Street and to the west of Sydney Rd has not received any direct notification, despite being directly affected.
As a result, the residents decided to form a community action group - Save Coburg. Its main purpose is to lobby the concerns of the community to the Moreland City Council and bring awareness of this critical issue to the greater public.
